The city is quite a surprise when first visiting. Strolling along the Riverfront in the early evening it has an almost European feel to it. Families come out after their evening meal to walk along the busy thoroughfare. The riverfront is the main centre for shopping, restaurants, bars, spas and other top places to visit.
The town is accessed over the Can Tho Bridge, a truly great cable stayed bridge. During the build, a horrible accident claimed the lives of 50 workers. This was a dark day for Vietnam, the worst engineering disaster in its history.
The Mekong Delta has a completely different atmosphere to other areas within the country. It is home to 17 million people, some of the poorest in the country. Can Tho is the administrative headquarters for all of this. Just a couple of miles along the river from the town centre is where you will find the incredible Cai Rang Floating Market. Hundreds of boats, both retail and wholesale arrive every morning before day break to set up their �?stalls’ Each boat has a long bamboo pole at the front, from which they hang a sample of their produce; pineapples, watermelons and all kind of fruit and veg. Tours leave the quayside every morning to witness these events. The market is one of the areas best activities.
