Baan Tao Restaurant is situated in the area of Khao Tao Beach. Thai owned but with a good varied menu it has been a firm favourite among locals, expats and passers-by for 6 years. We tried a few of the selections and washed them down with local beers. The restaurant is just a roadside, simple place with about half the seats inside and half outside. It’s a no airs and graces place as you would expect, in Thailand, however the food is extremely good quality.
At Bann Tao restaurant, we went mainly for the Thai options but sampled one Western dish to get a feel for how they handled it. The short answer is that they handled everything really well.
Baan Tao restaurant: The Food
Fried Rice
A pleasant enough version of one of Thailand’s staples. The rice was light and starch free and the flavours were really good.
Thai Pomelo Salad
Pomelo is very much hit and miss for me but I am glad to report that this was a huge hit. So often in Southeast Asia this fruit is dry, here it was fresh, sweet and juicy. This was a real winner.
Red Duck Curry
This was one of those great curry soups that the Thais are so good at. Packed full of lemon grass, herbs and spices it carried the duck along perfectly.
Stir Fried Chicken with Water Chestnuts
A good take on a Thai classic. The chicken was tender and fresh taking and the sauce was good.
Wiener Schnitzel with Fried Potatoes.
As stated Baan Tao restaurant also does Western favourites. A pleasant moist schnitzel is accompanied by cold potatoes which I have to say tasted very authentic. The vinegar tartness offset the meat really well.
Fried Banana with Ice Cream, Cream, Honey and Chocolate sauce
Well presented and completely well done. The batter on the banana was nice and crisp and not at all greasy, the ice cream was excellent and it was an ideal end to a really good meal.
A decent quality coffee rounded of a truly great Baan Tao restaurant Thai meal.
