A woman was on Wednesday (Aug 5) sentenced to 3 weeks’ jail for attempting to bribe a Singapore Customs officer.b Zhu Xiaolu, a Chinese national, was charged on Jun 26 for offering US$200 (S$280) to Higher Customs Officer Siow Teck Meng as a bribe to allow the release of commercial goods worth US$10,210 without having to apply for a permit. The Customs officer rejected the money and reported the matter to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), authorities said. It is an offence to bribe, or attempt to bribe, public officers in Singapore. Those convicted of corruption offences face a maximum of five years’ jail and a fine of up to S$100,000.
